Choose a source, then check its edition
The source index connects official files to the pages that use them. Official source coverage describes the source edition; displayed and comparison ranges describe the site’s selection and may be narrower. Published data editions identify the site packages. Source editions and checks distinguish record coverage, publication, acquisition, saved observations and later checks. Methods explain calculations, and Definitions explain units and missing states.
EOIR public CASE data
The saved CASE extract contains 173,279,536 accepted records across 98 tables. Source editions and fingerprints identify the files used; the live download can change.
Downloads and file identity
The official CASE archive is a large raw government download, about 4.55 GB for the pinned 2026-08 edition; the live URL may now serve another edition. Site JSON files and manifests are separate downloads. Match the edition, cutoff and SHA-256 before reproducing a calculation. A checksum identifies file bytes, not the completeness or accuracy of the government records.
Court routing and current information
The saved ZIP mapping contains 42,116 active ZIP strings. ZIP assignments, court contacts and map locations have separate source observations; none establishes legal venue or guarantees current operating conditions.
Census geography
2020 cartographic ZCTA boundaries provide geographic references. 33,777 active routing ZIPs match a ZCTA; 8,339 are lookup-only. These approximate areas do not establish legal venue.
Official BIA statistics
The official workload series covers all appeal categories. Keep it separate from the site’s more narrowly defined IJ Case Appeal populations.
USCIS and legal-help sources
USCIS national I-589 application counts come from the FY2026Q3 All Forms workbook. The separate principal-applicant history comes from Table 2 of the 2026-02-23 Federal Register publication; FY2025 is partial through 2025-05-22. Legal-help contacts come from EOIR’s 2026-07 provider list. Each page links to its original source.
Asylum records beyond grants and denials
National saved application results by proceeding completion year, including non-grant/non-denial categories and blank results. The original EOIR export and codebook define the fields; counts reconcile with the existing national grants and denials.
What is available
AsylumCompass publishes methodology, source references, release metadata, checksums and selected data files. Sources and Data updates link to the available editions.
What you can check
Published counts and ratios can be recalculated where the downloadable files contain the necessary records. Checksums identify a file version; they do not verify the underlying government records. The processing code is not publicly available, so these downloads do not provide a fully reproducible source-to-site pipeline.
Reusing published data
Published aggregate data files are available under CC0 1.0. Attribution is appreciated but not required. Keep the source, period and counting rules with any figures you reuse.
What stays unpublished
The website does not publish the raw government extract, internal case identifiers or private development files.
Calculation audits
These audits reproduce selected published metrics from the specified 2026-08 EOIR source edition and calculation rules. They do not independently verify that the source dataset captures every real-world event. Full source reproduction requires the pinned EOIR package; the public artifacts contain formulas, hashes and expected results without raw case records.
Legacy masks and current publication
The historical counts.json release used a count-reconstruction suppression model. Those masks are retained only to preserve that release. The current EOIR court, judge, nationality, representation, bond, duration, entry and absence views use separately validated complete public-source editions, so a legacy withheld cell can be visible on the site. BIA editions have separate disclosure scopes: the v1 companions retain certified small-cell and complementary masks, while earlier exact editions remain separate historical downloads and context. The old certificate never guaranteed non-reconstruction across later public outputs and is not a privacy claim for the current site.
Complete public judge result records can reconstruct counts hidden in legacy aggregate tables. Those tables no longer provide a non-reconstruction guarantee. The timeline omits case identifiers and personal attributes.
BIA IJ Case Appeal data and release
BIA v1 uses the 2026-08 EOIR CASE release observed through 2026-08-31, with disposition fiscal years running 10-01–09-30. The frozen national method is bia-decided-1 and bia-disposition-taxonomy-1; the versioned companion manifest identifies its source, build and disclosure certificate. EOIR’s official all-appeals workload report uses a wider population and separate totals.
