How busy is the immigration court system?
FY2026 through Q3 · latest official reporting point
Through 2026-06-30. Pending is a stock at that date; receipts and completions are cumulative from 2025-10-01 through 2026-06-30.
3,469,569pending cases at 2026-06-30
391,145initial receipts, FY to date
660,343total completions, FY to date
FY2026 is incomplete. Its nine months of activity should not be compared as a full year with FY2025. This national stock cannot be allocated to individual courts or used to predict a personal hearing date.

All three series share one scale. Pending is a stock at fiscal year end; receipts and completions are flows during the year. The stock is not the running difference of the two flows, because cases also leave and re-enter the inventory for other reasons.

Completions include initial and subsequent completions; receipts count new cases. Their ratio describes workload and does not predict a hearing date or necessarily equal the change in pending cases.
Court profiles show published asylum decision records. Verified court backlog and monthly trends need comparable, dated court inventories; the national stock above cannot be allocated to courts.
How long have historical records taken?
This page groups records by the year they entered the database. That is different from the decision year selected on an outcome page. It shows all entry years; your earlier selections are kept in the return link.
Of proceeding records entered in each fiscal year, how many have a completion date recorded by 2026-08-31?

A recorded proceeding completion may be a transfer or another administrative event; it does not mean the person’s immigration case is finally resolved. “No completion entry” is a snapshot description, not a verified pending-case count.
Completed-duration distribution for each entry cohort
Days from proceeding input to recorded completion; completed subset only
Court profiles summarize eligible asylum grant-or-denial proceedings completed in FY2025. This table starts with records entered during each earlier year and describes their state at the snapshot. People can have multiple proceedings, and newer entry cohorts have had less time to accumulate completions.
Neither summary forecasts the remaining time for an unfinished case.
Proceedings entered in earlier years
Proceedings grouped by the court stored in the 2026-08 snapshot. This does not reconstruct the original court at entry after transfers.
Choose a court to read every observed entry-year group on that court's profile. National entry-year totals remain in the tables above.
Pending cases and initial receipts cover removal, deportation, exclusion, asylum-only and withholding-only cases. Total completions include both initial and subsequent completions. The clearance ratio is total completions divided by initial receipts. Backlog change is the difference between consecutive fiscal-year-end pending stocks.
Meaning and limits
The numerator and denominator of clearance have different event scopes; the ratio need not explain backlog change. A national workload trend does not predict a particular hearing date. A current raw record with missing completion fields is not automatically a verified pending case or a historical court inventory.
AsylumCompass coverage
Complete FY2021–FY2025 plus partial FY2026 through Q3, ending 2026-06-30. Complete-year comparisons use FY2021–FY2025 only; FY2026 is excluded. The underlying EOIR source also contains earlier fiscal years; its official coverage is listed separately in Data and sources. Values and the source hash are pinned in the release.
National workload and entry-cohort series: JSONMarkdown
